West Bend Students Invited to Participate in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Writing Contest

FOR ALL EDUCATORS
For the first time, the Brewers Community Foundation, Inc. and Marcus Performing Arts Center have expanded the opportunity for children from communities outside Milwaukee to participate in the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr writing contest. Students of West Bend and Wauwatosa have been invited to submit their 2D artwork, writing, or speech centered on the theme “Your Life has Significance.” The submission deadline is October 17 and winners will be recognized during a ceremony on January 19, 2020.

Students in Kindergarten through grade 12 are able to showcase their writing, speaking, and art talents as they reflect on a quote from the speech Dr. King Jr. gave at Barratt Junior High School in Philadelphia in October 1967: “Don’t allow anybody to make you feel that you’re nobody. Always feel that you count. Always feel that you have worth, and always feel that your life has ultimate significance.” This quote is the basis for the theme "Your Life Has Significance."

Entries will be collected at the district office and a group of local judges will be formed to select the top three in each age group and category to move forward in the competition. Detailed information on the age groups, criteria, and process will follow in a future edition of The Highlighter and the information will be distributed in parent communication.
